Capture Chester: The Story Behind The Image

We’ve had such an amazing response to our Capture Chester Photography Competition that we wanted to showcase some of the talented photographers who have entered so far.

Many of the images made us curious to know more (the sign of a good image!) so we caught up with each photographer to find out a little more info!

Susan Ryan: Love Locks

‘Shortly before we all went into lockdown, I attended a workshop in Chester organised by Welshot - presented by Will Cheung - on how to get your work published.

‘Will sent us all out on an imaginary assignment - to get three photos that could be used to promote Chester. Harder than you might think, because Chester has a lot of very photogenic landmarks but it’s not so easy to put your own stamp on it and show a bit of originality - especially as it was a very cold, grey day with miserable light.

‘I'm fascinated with “lovelocks” and have a number of photos of them; they seem to tell a story, which is often very personal. So it was a stroke of luck for me to spot one as I walked across the footbridge in Eastgate.  Instead of the very famous clock, I chose the “lovelock” fastened to the railings.

‘I've done quite a bit of street photography in recent years, but I like to try out different things and at the moment I'm enjoying learning more about portraits, so my Flickr page is a bit of a mix. I'm also a member of the all female photography group SheClicks which has around 10,000 members. Post processing is my nemesis, so I need to get to grips with that!’
