The Pentax 17 has a manual film winding mechanism like those in the days of the original Pentax SLRs. Whilst being classically styled, it is easy to use for those who may be new to film photography, with a simple loading system. Film is manually rewound via a rewind crank and the camera features dedicated exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity dials. A bright optical viewfinder features a close-up visual field compensation frame, and zone marks.

Incorporating some more modern tech to make the shooting experience easy for all levels, the camera can automatically adjust exposure settings based on ambient light, via it's own metering sensor. The Pentax 17 has a Full Auto mode, plus six other modes to get the best shot in every situation, including a Bulb mode which is useful for long exposures or shooting in dark conditions.

The Pentax 17 has a classic film-styled design, throwing it back to the original film era. The body is durable and constructed with a lightweight magnesium alloy. There is a 40.5mm filter thread on the front element and three strap lugs which make possible unobstructed shooting either horizontally or vertically.
