The New 100-400mm L IS II USM lens from Canon is a long awaited replacement. The latest installment features improved stabilization (3 settings), new coated optics for reduced chromatic aberation and optics and an automatic tripod recognition to assist Image Stabilisation. The most noticeable change is the move away from the old push and pull design, opting for a traditional twist zoom to hopefully eliminate unwated dust and improve ergonomics.

Versatile super-telephoto performance

The newly designed Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM is a replacement of the original Canon EF 100-400mm, with the same focal range and aperture, but with a newly designed set of lens elements, upgraded image stabilisation, the new ASC (Air Sphere Coating) designed to cut down lens flare when shooting towards bright light, a closer minimum focus distance and better optical performance. It is an ideal addition to any sport or wildlife photographer’s kit.

A compact, high-performance 100-400mm zoom lens that’s ideal for those shooting sports, action and wildlife photography. A 4-stop Image Stabilizer and high-quality optics deliver superb sharpness.

Key Points:

  • Versatile, portable super-telephoto zoom lens
  • Superb image quality right across the frame
  • Prevent camera shake with a 4-stop Image Stabilizer
  • Customise the feel of the zoom control for different situations
  • Fast, near-silent focusing
  • Shoot confidently in tough weather conditions

Ergonomic Handling

The original push-pull / trombone zoom design has been replaced with the, now standard, rotating zoom ring. An improved zoom torque ring gives more control over zoom tension, allowing you to adjust the tension to your shooting style, whether it be locking the focal length to avoid accidental changes or loosening the tension for situations where a quick change will be needed.

A new lens hood featuring a “side window” gives more flexibility when using filters, easily allowing filters to be changed, while the hood remains on the lens.

Stay sharp, whatever the light

Stabilisation has been significantly improved, making hand-held shooting with shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal. It offers 3 different types of Image Stabilisation – standard, panning and during exposure only – offering up to 4 stops of stabilisation, compared to just 1.5 on the original. These huge improvements make it an ideal lens for handheld work.

Comprising 21 elements, in sixteen groups, including a fluorite crystal element and an ultra-low dispersion glass element to effectively tackle chromatic aberration. The newly designed lens promises sharp images with high resolution and contrast.

As with all new Canon L series lenses, the 100-400mm mk II is weather and dust sealed. The lens exterior is crafted from magnesium alloy for maximum durability with minimal weight impact. A fluorine coating on the front element repels dirt and water, for easy cleaning and working in tough conditions.

A 9 blade aperture, gives an almost circular diaphragm for softer, more even background blur / bokeh.

The Canon EF 100-400mm mk II offers close focusing up to up to 3.2ft or 98cm. The USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) autofocus is fast and near-silent. Full-time manual focus override also allows precision adjustments without taking your eye away from the camera.

It is compatible with the Canon Extender EF 1.4x II and Extender EF 2x II for a lightweight and affordable way of extending the focal distance of the lens.*

Measuring just 3.7 x 7.6 inches (9.4 x 19.3cm), and weighing 1.64kg including a removable tripod mount, this is a relatively lightweight and compact telephoto lens.

*Please note, that AF compatibility when using Extenders varies by lens and by camera.
