I’m an amateur who waited and waited to make the quantum leap from an original D70. Price is forgotten after just 4 days – what a camera. D7000 may also have been quantum leap in image quality for me but it didn’t compare in the hand with the D800’s excellent quality. Initial impressions; good fit in the hand, love extra height in grip, controls still intuitive for a Nikon user, no real learning curve. 4 custom shooting menus and 4 custom settings menus are great. With so many parameters you can change having these are a must so you can set for shooting situations and not worry about putting everything back every time you change situations. Focusing and metering are excellent. Love the bright view finder and it’s built in cover. Details in the images are breath taking. Unfortunately those in front of the camera need to have a facial first, as you can see individual skin pours even when shooting full length portraits! Even using none VR lenses it is hammers the battery far more than the old camera, checking full charge and a spare battery are needed, a grip will become a must for extended use. I have the standard D800 and moire has already been an issue on even plain colour cotton T shirts shot with 85mm lens at range of 2m or just over. If you’re an amateur experienced with a DSLR considering it you won’t be disappointed it’s an amazing piece of kit. Cheaper than a pet dog! Ditch the smartphone contract and get a cheap phone to save some £, images you create will be worth far more to you than the cost- so price justified! Just need new PC now to fly through the NEF processing. I would not recommend to a friend – why, because things this good should be kept a secret! (Posted on 18/02/2013)Overall
